">There are many data collection tools available for research. Data collection is defined as “the process of gathering and measuring information on variables of interest, in an established systematic fashion that enables one to answer stated research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes” (Ewen, n.d.). You can utilize surveys, questionnaires, personal interviews, focus groups, observation, and case studies; just to name a few. The type of data collection tool that is used depends on the type of research data needed, whether it is quantitative data or qualitative data. Data collection must be accurate in order to provide valid and reliable research results. I found both quantitative and qualitative articles that support my research question, which is: Does increased disease management and healthy lifestyle education decrease the prevalence of progression from renal insufficiency to Chronic Kidney Disease in the African American population?
Some challenges to data collection are data quality issues, finding relevant data, deciding what data is important, unstructured data, and low participant response for data collection. My research project focuses on decreasing the prevalence of disease progression from renal insufficiency to chronic kidney disease in the African American community through education and lifestyle changes. I would use questionnaires to determine education level and lifestyle behaviors. I would also use medical records information such as demographics and lab results for data collection. To maintain the integrity of the data collected, each potential participant will be given informed consent to increase understanding of why such data is needed and the importance of being truthful and providing accurate data.
