Leveraging Community Partnerships to Address Transportation Barriers for Older Adults: A Case Study of Lana's Approach
To provide abundant access to older adults and efficiently use the resources Lana has discovered, she would leverage the assets mapping approach for the community she serves. Asset mapping is a vital practice for social work to actively locate resources within communities that could benefit the members and address social issues such as lack of transportation. The assets can be of personal interest, within a group or organization, or within a given proximity of the members being served (Miranda et al., 2021). First, she could use the assets of her mother, who is a nurse at the local health clinic, to collaboratively ensure that seniors do not miss appointments by seeking their guidance regarding using the public busses or other forms of transportation. She could also use the assets mapping technique to use the volunteers and space for social activities at the senior center during the day to offer opportunities designed to address the needs of the seniors in collaboration with the school board and the community center staff (The Aspen Institute et al., 2020). For instance, she could streamline the seniors' health care information to the Department of Transportation, which informs the assigned students the requirement for each clinic visit and link them with the seniors. In the same vein, she could use this technique to encourage high school students to help the seniors access health services.
